The infusion of federal COVID-19 relief funds is an opportunity to strategically invest in and modernize the public health system. Legislation to improve the sustainability of public health departments includes $7.4 billion for the recruitment and hiring of public health workers and $2.45 billion for emergency preparedness and response purposes.
