WEBdr. Daniel Hale Williams (1856–1931) Daniel Hale Williams opened the nation’s first Black-owned interracial hospital, Provident Hospital. Dr. Williams is also a medical pioneer. On July 10, 1893, he became the first doctor to successfully execute open-heart surgery on a human, and he is regarded as the first African American cardiologist.
